So, how about it? What are some things that have worked for your rescue or rescues that you know of? What would draw your attention if you weren't aware of rescue horses? I know that we have some folks on this list that regularly do news releases. How many of you utilize the local media? Do you send information to them in hopes of getting a slot on the local news and how often have you been successful? How about local papers, tv shows, horse papers, etc? Dogs & cats often have adoption days in pet shops - how many rescues have tried something similar at feedd stores or tack shops? How about sponsoring an award @ local/4-H shows? The price of a ribbon or trophy would be very small in comparison to the PR generated. It wouldn't have to be done @ every show -- year-end? And it can be set-up that it's announced @ each show that the participants can cast their vote when they register for classes. Or how about inviting children's groups (girl/boy scouts , under priv) out to the rescue for the day. That would generate press interest. I've never heard of the "adopt" program @ pet stores. How does that work? Well , they are hosted by local feed stores. A rep from Purina gives a talk about nutrition (very informative) & they usually have guest speakers (trainers , vets , etc). When you go (usually requires reservations) there's refreshments & door prizes & you're registered in their nat'l drawing. Ads for it are found in the major horsey mags. I was thinking , wouldn't these seminars be a great place to let people know about the rescues in the area. Reps from the rescues can be guest speakers. Even if you aren't a speaker , it would be a great place to network. ============================================================ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 12:38:49 -0700 To: equinerescue@MyList.net From: Pat Calloway Subject: Re: EQ-ResQ: PR At 11:27 PM 1/4/99 -0500, judi kintz wrote: >I've never heard of the "adopt" program @ pet stores. They have a place in the store where some of the animals are crated/caged and they discuss adoption. The bad thing is that a lot of them allow adoptions right at the store which seems to be to not be in the best interest of the animal if it's an impulse adoption. The good thing is that it does get the word out on the animals. So, while I wouldn't recommend bringing a horse to say - Petsmart - it might be a good thing to set up a table with a vcr and run some tapes of horses available and past adopted horses, have photos and fliers and discuss adoption/rescue and do this at horse shows, tack shops, feed stores, etc. ============================================================ From: "May, Cris" To: "'equinerescue@MyList.net'" , "'Pat Calloway'" Subject: RE: EQ-ResQ: PR Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 15:15:17 -0500 >They have a place in the store where some of the animals are crated/caged and they discuss adoption. After reading the adoption contract, etc., I was shocked that they let me take the dog then and there. They explained that doing a housecheck consists of one of their volunteers driving by your house and if it doesn't look right they come in! I've had the dog over two weeks and received no info from them at all, not even info on vaccinations. Personally (although I love the dog) this has left a little bad taste in my mouth about the adopting organization, particularly in contrast to how we check out prospective homes for horses. >So, while I wouldn't recommend bringing a horse to say - Petsmart> I spoke to the manager of my local PetsMart in the spring about some support for our org. and he suggested exactly that! Not for an adoption, but to make people aware of us. Now I don't think he meant bring a horse into the store, but he might have. We didn't do it because the store is in a huge open shopping center with no trees and little unpaved area to provide relief for the horse. Our plans are for her to focus on Rainbow Acres (sorry bout that) and including a list of rescues and their addresses from across the country for people to be able to find one near them. It would be a benefit to all rescues, while educating people about the drug and foals. I do have a list of people that said she could contact them about Premarin, so eventually she will. We have not forgot. I am working on a list of addresses for my surrounding area (PA, NJ, NY, MD, DE, and Eastern OH) to display on a poster board at the larger shows around here to let people know there are several of us out here. Thought about making others for different areas of the country and sending them to horse clubs to be displayed at the larger shows. For example, at the Nationals or Congress, there are people that come from all over to watch and it would be a great way to get the word out about all the rescues, no matter where people are from. Unfortunately it's not on the HBPA website. Since in a way folks are "marketing" concepts of rescue/adoption, etc, it appears to me to be useful in that respect. One item that may be useful in writing flyers, press releases, web pages, etc was "Words that Work" that was based on a marketing demographic survey - according to them, these are the 20 most persuasive words in the English language: you, results, love, fast, money, health, discovery, why, save, new, easy, guarantee, safety, yes, benefits, free, sale, now, announcing, proven. I'm not quite sure how you could use all of them in relation to equine rescue though! It also says that print ads should not be text heavy - but brochures should be text heavy. Photos are more effective than illustrations and should be captioned. Two page ads are more effective than 1 page ads in drawing readers (Hummm, must be why the Premarin and other pharmaceutical ads are usually THREE pages long!) and one page ads are more effective than 1/2 page ads. Color is good. Photos are better than illustrations and should be captioned. Ads with people in them get more readers. Kind of interesting - I think with the material that goes out, you want to catch the eye of the prospective reader/donor FIRST, then get your message across. If they don't read it, they won't learn anything about your cause or organization and they won't read it (usually, some of us will read the backs of cereal boxes! ) if it doesn't look interesting to them. I have been involved with America's Family Pet Expo. (AFP) the show is put on by WWPSA (World Wide Pet Supply Association), the shows theme has always been "promoting responsible pet ownership through education" I E-mailed Gail privately and found that TIER was not represented. I then called Doug the show director and asked him if he was interested in having them. he promptly chewed my out for not knowing better after all these years. }:-) "of course we want them" so needless to say TIER was offered a booth. WWPSA is staffed by the most wonderful people and the more groups & clubs they can get the better the show becomes. Every year over one third of all booth space is donated to groups and clubs like Tier. Now as to me, I've been involved with the show in one capacity or another since 1993 I have designed and run numerous booths for them and been invited back every year to do it again. My current assignments are the kid's aquarium contest, assisting the Koi Club with display pool set up (they're an elderly group) setting up a coupla display tanks & Assisting TIER with setting up and running their booth. I have offered my help to TIER and will do everything I can to help them design a booth that (hopefully) people will have trouble walking away from, My hope is to grab their hearts and gain the publics support both financially & politically through education. As Gail said any one that has material printed, Published or photographic that we can use please please let us know. we need pictures and stories of auction & feedlot rescues, we need graphically detailed pictures with captions showing the before and after of what a little TLC can do. we need the sad stories of rescues that didn't survive, and rescues that could have been and didn't happen. We would like to show the "final ride" beginning with the stock trailers all the way through the butchering process (in color if possible) any thing you can send for us to use would be an enormous help. we are hoping to gain industrial sponsors to help pay for printed material as well as story boards and posters. again we hope to have a booth they will find it hard to walk away from. The AFP show in 1997 and again in 1998 had to close their parking lots when they ran out of space, for the last two years running the show during it's THREE DAY RUN had an attendance of over 70,000 people, that's more than the orange county fair had during it's 3 week run in 1996. with your help we (not just TIER but the whole Equine rescue effort) has the chance to impact over 70,000 people in just three days. but we can't do it alone, your help is the key to their hearts. Now here's more good news, in October 1998 there was a second AFP show held in northern calif. it was a test run and it was a success, so now there will be two AFP shows every year. If we do a good booth here then there is a chance that one of our northern calif. groups will be invited to do a booth in October. I'll send more info. on that later. but for now if anyone has any ideas or material we could use please let us know, send it to Gail or myself. here is the pomona fairplex web site for show dates and time just click on the calendar of events http://www.fairplex.com/ and here is the WWPSA site for show info http://www.wwpsa.com/ In Advance thank you for your help and support.
