Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 15:06:07 -0400 Most of them, even the best, don't work longer than a few hours. Plus, when the horse sweats they stop working. Fly masks work well for the face and ears. You can buy mesh fly sheets that help with the body. Providing run in sheds where they can get out of the sun helps, and you can install fly traps and fly strips in them. Keeping the manure picked up and in a remote pile helps. Having a place where they can choose to be in a treed area or out in the sun helps them escape which every flies/buggies are most prevelent at the time. Be sure to spray the belly and all underneath parts, as well as the lower legs. Some people cut the toes out of socks and put those on the horse's legs to help keep flies off -- it works! You can also apply fly spray to the outside of the socks once you have them on. I've never heard of a home-made fly spray that works better than store bought, though some may work as well. Forgot -- use the socks only below the knees, and not too tight... sort of a baggy, warm ups effect works. You can use vetwrap just tight enough at the top to keep them on, but not to restrict the tendons. And you can also run the softer on there bodies Patricia h. Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 21:27:25 -0400 I give my mare 1 teaspoon of garlic powder per day with her feed. This is not a cure-all but it does make her much less appetizing to flies, etc., also worked with my TB. She does not smell garlicky at all. I still have to use a fly sheet with her because they really *bug* her (sorry *G*), and this is something you might want to consider if your horse is really miserable. I still use fly spray for the small amount it helps, and I alternate between a natural formula, Don't Bug Me, and Equisect or whatever 'chemical' variety is on sale at the tack shop. The skin so soft is a moisturizing after shower oil and makes them gleem!! But I have to warn ya it STINKS!! Good luck! I've switched to Solitude wipe on/pour on this year and have been totally impressed. I'm literally only having to apply it about every two weeks right now...and yet it's rained 7 of the last 11 days since I last applied it...and yet, only one horse out of the 13 was starting to have a fly issue today. It's been better than any of the sprays I've ever used so far. dawn ========== BLRYSTROM@aol.com ====== To: equinerescue@imagicomm.com From: Cozynjoan@aol.com Subject: Re: EQ-ResQ: Fly Sprays? The solitude is a thick white creamy liquid that looks really similar to hair conditioner. You pour it down their backline and then use a mitt or towel to wipe it on their face and legs. I can't say enough about it and in my opinion, it puts wipe to shame which has always been my old standby. They have 3 choices: 32 oz spray, 16 oz wipe on, or 3 packs of 5 oz pour on. Recommended dose is 1/2 oz per 100 lb or up to 5 oz per animal. This is very reasonably priced and Valley Vet has free shipping on this product. Are you using the wipe on or the pour on? I want to give this a try but want to be sure I'm using the same thing you are since you're having good results. Thanks for all the posts with methods of fly control. I'm tired of buying bottle after of bottle of Tri Tech 14 and Bite Free. With 2 horses I've been using about a bottle a week. Sheesh, that gets expensive. The worst part is the horses don't have lasting relief. I also am using Equitrol so fly eggs don't hatch in the manure. (I clean up the barn area, but not the pastures). But there are cattle farmers all around me so there are still tons of flies. This year decided to try the spray. It works well too but I think the wipeon's better, my mare is the only one at the stable we keep her at who isn't bothered by the flies very much. The bad thing is the bottle it comes in sprays really hard in a straight stream, but you can just use another bottle. ========== "theresa meadows" ====== DISCLAIMER: These posts contain hints, tips and ideas from folks that have had some experiences dealing with this.
